BEHIND THE SONG

SONGS & STORIES

Ever Wonder What Inspired A Writer To Pen That Song? I Will Feature "The Story Behind The Song" Of Some Of Your Best Loved Songs As Well As The Ones I Write.

THERE IS POWER IN THE BLOOD
Both the words and music of this old hymn were written during a camp meeting at Mountain Lake Park, Maryland by Lewis Jones. Jones, a California native, graduated from Moody Bible Institute and spent his vocational life with the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA). On the side he wrote hymns. This is his best known, is particularly effective in resisting the "wiles of the devil."

I'D RATHER HAVE JESUS
George Beverly Shea, "America's beloved gospel singer," has traveled with the Billy Graham evangelistic team since 1946. He was born in 1909 in Winchester, Ontario, where his dad served as pastor of the Wesleyan Methodist Church. His mother was the church organist.

One Sunday he sat down at his mother's organ to practice for the morning service. His eyes fell on a clipping she had left for him there, a poem witten in 1922 by Mrs Rhea F. Miller. As he read the words, they spoke to him about his own aims and ambitions in life.

When his mother came in from the kitchen, he played and sang it for her. Wrapping both arms around him, she placed a wet cheek against his. In church that evening he sang "I'd Rather Have Jesus" publicly for the first time. It later became a sort of "signature" song expressing George Beverly Shea's own decisions in life.

JESUS SAVES
This hymn came from the pen of a public school teacher named Priscilla Owens, a lifelong native of Baltimore, Maryland. For forty-nine years she taught school in Baltimore, devoting her spart time to her local Methodist Episcopal Church. Priscilla wrote much poetry that was published in the Methodist Protestant and the Christian Standard. Prisicilla wrote this hymn in 1882 for the anniversary of the Union Square Methodist Sunday School in Baltimore.

GOD IS NEAR (In Times of Fear)
words and music by Larry K. Davis
Just after the 9/11 hit in New York everywhere I would go the same conversation was taking place. People were talking about the day the world stood still and did so for a long time. I heard people talk about family, prayer, and being together in unity. No one could seem to find any peace of mind.

As the words came I started to write:
Verse 1
Just when I think that prayer has not been answered
He'll speak in voice so sincere. And for a moment
I seem to have forgotten but trusting
HIM all worries they..... disappear

As I penned this song that day the words and music came very quickly.
Then came the Chorus..
God Is near in times of Fear
for there's no doubt He'll
always be there. It is good
to know in HIM you'll find
peace of mind. And for us
He's there all the time.

As I wrote the 2nd verse I remembered a conversation I heard between 2 individuals and away I went..
Verse 2
Someone once told me
they can't always be there
but the good news is our God can.
In going through life's journey
and when you fall down on your
knees God is always there to help you stand.

and the TAG line goes:
It's good to know in HIM
You'll find peace of mind
And for us He's there all the time
